If you’ve never been to Bali before, then it’s likely that you’ve never heard of Nyepi. It marks the Balinese Hindu New Year and is
celebrated on the first new moon in March. The whole island shuts down for a full 24 hours, and the streets are off limits to everyone.
It is a day of compulsory quietness that is reserved for self-contemplation. So anything that may interfere with that is restricted. Balinese and foreigners have to remain inside their homes, villas or hotels without any disturbances. No travelling, transport, work, sound, or… even light !
This year, Nyepi falls on Thursday March 3rd 2022, beginning at 6am and finishing 24 hours later at 6am on March 4th.
A tradition marks by ceremonies and parades
Several days before Nyepi, a purification ceremony and ritual called Melasti takes place. A parade of villagers carry all the sacred
objects from their temple to a nearby ocean or lake to clean and purify them with “holy water”.
The evil spirits are driven away by the local people who make massive papier-mâché monsters called ‘Ogoh Ogoh’. The night before Nyepi, they are paraded through the streets with loud music, bursts of fire and people lining the streets.
Parades are designed to catch the attention of evil spirits and draw them to the island. Then, by the time they arrive, they find an island with no sign of human life. Disappointed, the evil spirits decide to depart while leaving the island cleansed and evil-free for another year ahead.
Traditionally hosted on crowded village and city streets, Nyepi parades have been cancelled over the past two years due to COVID-19.
What you should expect on Nyepi Day

Where to stay on Bali’s Silent Day ?
Since you can not leave your Balinese accommodation on Nyepi day, Villa Saia Gili Air offers special rates to freely and fully enjoy your days on Gili Air, Lombok. No restrictions here!
You can scuba dive, snorkel or procrastinate on the beach… 🙂 To get to Gili air, the best would be by fast boat by now. Eka Jaya
still has several ferries per week departing from Bali to Gili Air, but schedules are not daily. Departures are organized from Padangbai or Serangan and they provide a shuttle service.
